What is inside your mattress? Role of top layer for choosing the right mattress

The level of comfort you can enjoy while sleeping on your bed depends on the quality of the mattress! That’s elementary! We all are aware of how a good quality mattress can be the key to a sound, undisturbed sleep.

But, most of us are not aware that the mattresses have several comfort layers each of which serves a unique purpose. These comfort layers are the layers at the top, which make up a part of the mattress closest to the body. These layers generally have 2 to 4 inches of thickness, and the potential to determine the quality of your sleep. Here is a brief discussion about the importance of different comfort layers of mattresses.

Pressure relief

The comfort layers that consist of the top few inches of your mattress are an important aspect of the mattress construction. These are responsible for the pressure relief you can enjoy while sleeping.
It forms a cradle, which is shaped according to your body profile. When you change the position while asleep, the ability to change the previous shape of the cradle to suit your new sleeping position forms the key to sleeping comfortably.
The comfort layers also include the quilting layers used in the top part of the mattresses as they, too, give a pressure relieving quality to your mattress.

Support the recessed areas

Another function of the comfort layers is to support the recessed areas of your body like the lumbar or the low back region and prevent it from sagging.
These functions of the comfort layers of mattresses depend on the method of mattress construction as discussed beneath.
• The progressive construction method uses a thinner comfort layer that "borrows" from the core of the mattress to complement its ability to provide pressure relief and support the recessed parts of the body.
• The differential construction method uses thicker comfort layers that provide a maximum pressure relief by themselves and contribute greatly to supporting the recessed areas of the body.
• The zoned construction method uses either thicker and thinner comfort layer.
Other features of the comfort layers that determine its ability to relieve pressure and support or fill in the gaps in your body’s profile include softness, progressive resistance, and point elasticity. Let us have a look at them one by one:

• Softness

The higher softness of the comfort layers can allow you to sink in deep enough into the mattress to form a cradle. It can improve its ability to relieve pressure and prevents back pain caused due to a wrong body posture. Most of sleepers prefer medium firmness of mattress and here you can find a comparison of them

• Progressive resistance

The higher progressive resistance can control the sinking so that you don't go all the way down through the layers. This is an as important feature as the softness because it can help to avoid the discomfort in getting up from the bed or moving or changing the sides during sleep.
It will prevent you from sinking into your bed beyond a point that is necessary for an optimum pressure relief. So, a good and comfortable mattress in the one that has a perfect balance of softness and progressive resistance.

Point elasticity

Point elasticity of the comfort layers refers to its ability to shape itself exactly to suit your profile. If you suffer from a backache or other joint problems due to a wrong body posture or prolonged working hours in front of a computer; you are advised to opt for the mattresses having a higher point elasticity. This will ensure your mattress can mold according to the shape your body takes during different positions and provide apt support to all the joints.
Different materials of comfort layers provide these features in varying degrees. For example:
• Latex is among the best quality materials that is unusual for its ability to be supportive and soft, both at the same time.
• Memory Foam, on the other hand, is a very soft material, particularly when pressure and heat are applied. It works well for forming a cradle and reducing pressure.
Comfort layers serve as an important feature of your mattress as they perform several functions including cradling your body and distributing weight evenly for pressure relief. They can also respond appropriately to the sleep position movement and provide a higher level of comfort in each position. These characteristics can improve the body and spine alignment and promote healthy sleep.
