The Best Kept Secrets For Staying Cool in the Summer

The Best Kept Secrets For Staying Cool in the Summer

If you’re fortunate enough to live in a hot climate, you may not feel fortunate all the time! Getting too hot can put a real dampener on our day. We can feel irritable, drained, and like we can’t get anything done.

Getting overheated is an inconvenience at best but at its worst it can be unhealthy. It’s important that we take precautions to stay cool and protected in the sun. But this can be difficult if we still want to have fun, socialise, and do our normal daily activities. Luckily, there are a few well-kept secrets for staying cool revealed below. Incorporate a few into your own routine and be prepared to have the best Summer ever.

Be Conscious Of Your Clothes

It can be tempting to wear as little as possible during hotter days but this isn’t always the best policy. It is not how little you wear, it is the materials you wear. Staying cool can actually sometimes mean covering up! Protecting your skin from direct sunlight can keep your body temperature down. We just have to make strategic choices about our clothing. Wear light, breathable materials like cotton and go for loose fits over body-conscious styles. Lighter colours reflect light rather than absorbing heat, so they are a better choice than black.

Gentle Exercise

Although walking and running might be the last thing on our minds on a hot Summer’s day, gentle exercise can help us stay cool. It opens our pores and makes us sweat, instantly cooling us down. If you’re outdoors, ensure that you’re wearing effective sunscreen and find shade where possible. Don’t be tempted to overdo it or the effect can be counterproductive. But lying still and getting hotter and hotter is rarely wise. A bit of gentle movement and fresh air will help us to feel cooler.

Staying In is the New Going Out

If you’re trying to keep cooler in the Summer, try staying in! Open doors and windows, and enjoy a conservatory if you have one. But on extremely hot days, staying in can be wise. Invite friends round for snacks, chatter, and relaxation but don’t feel that you have to go out every day to appreciate the summer. Let fresh air circulate in the rooms and carefully monitor your heating and air conditioning.

Stay Hydrated

What you eat and drink can have a huge impact on whether or not you stay cool. Ensure you’re drinking enough water and not relying heavily on sugary drinks. Drinks that are high in sugar or caffeine can act as diuretics, so they may actually be dehydrating you in effect. Try to avoid foods that are high in salt too. Fruit salads, juicy watermelon, vegetables and sugar free drinks are all great options. Serve everything on ice for a cooling and refreshing sensation. Eating a little lighter than normal can also help ensure that we are not getting too overheated by digesting heavy meals. Eat regularly and make smart choices, but overall keep taking in fluids. You’ll feel better, cooler, and protect yourself from dehydration and heatstroke.
