Make Your Garden More Secure In 3 Easy Steps

You may have already taken the necessary precautions to make your home safe and sound. But one mistake many homeowners make is forgetting to secure their gardens.

The sad reality is that thieves will take anything they get their hands on. Without some protection, your garden could be a place for thieves to acquire ornaments, equipment and toys. This could leave you and your loved ones feeling vulnerable and less inclined to spend time outside. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and there are plenty of things you can do to make your garden a happy and secure space.

Add some lighting

Lighting can not only make your garden look fantastic at night time, but it can also put off thieves. They will be put off entering your garden if it is well lit. There are plenty of options you can choose from which won’t detract from your garden's beauty. You could use a halogen floodlight that has a sensor included which will turn on when it senses movement. Just ensure that it is positioned away from your neighbours homes and from busy roads. But try to have it aimed at access points such as paths and driveways to make it easier to see who it entering. You can also use smaller stake lights that are battery or solar powered. These can be placed wherever around sheds and decking, but must be in direct sunlight during the day.

Check your boundaries

Your garden’s boundaries need to be maintained and checked regularly to ensure your garden is as safe as possible. Walk around both your front and back yard and look for any gaps in your fences, walls and hedges. Particularly if you live in an older property where the boundaries may have worn or rotted away. If you do have some holes or gaps, install some secure residential fencing or plant new hedges as soon as possible. This will stop thieves from crawling through the spaces and entering your property. Also, think about the height of your boundaries and consider adding some trellis panels or prickly plants. This will make it harder for thieves to climb over and adds extra security for little money. Just remember not to block out the natural light from your garden.

Make your paths and driveways noisier

Grass is great at making your garden look healthy, but can also make it easy for thieves to navigate around your garden unheard. To give you some warning of potential intruders, why not combine a combination of materials in your paths and driveways. This will make it more difficult for thieves to quietly enter and exit your garden. Gravel is an ideal choice and will complement a number of garden looks as it comes in an array of colours and styles. You can also mix gravel with brick, wood and slabs to create a combination of materials. That way your garden will be hard to cross without making some noise.

So make these changes and ensure that your garden is always secure. Use your common sense and keep tools locked up and out of sight when not in use. Also check that you have suitable insurance to cover you should the worst happen.
