Is Your House Exterior As Stylish As The Interior?

When it comes to home style, nine times out of ten people are thinking of their interior style. There's a good reason for this too. The inside is where you spend much of your time, so it's only natural to want to focus your time and effort into that area.

Nevertheless, style is a universal principle. One area that is often neglected is the outside of a home, often referred to as the curb appeal. Sure, it's something we all think about when we're trying to sell, but it only gets cursory focus during our tenure.

It's a strange thing to overlook. The exterior of our home is something we see every day. It's also the first impression that visitors get. So if you have spent a lot of time focusing on indoor decor, then turn a little of that stylistic flair to the outside. There are five key areas to focus on.

1. Brickwork

Depending on how recently your house was built, the brickwork is likely in a variety of different stages. Unless you're in a totally new build, it could probably do with a good power washing. Pollution and other factors can make a house seem dirty, but because you see it every day, you don't notice the change is happening.

When everything is clean, you have two options. Leave the brickwork as it is for a more rustic look, or update with house painting. Light colors tend to tarnish easily, while grays and deep yellows will have more longevity.

2. Unsightly Cables

Cable, telephone, internet - usually they're snaking over the front of your house, and they don't look pretty. Climbing plants are a good way to disguise them if you have got green thumbs. A trellis can be attached over the cable - being careful not to drill through it, of course - and a plant trained to climb it.

If you are disinclined to have to worry about keeping a plant, then you can buy false versions. These have the upside of not only being worry free but will also provide flowers and greenery year round. If you source them from the right place, they won't look fake either.

3. Walkways and Gravel

Gravel is something you lay down in the hopes of then being able to forget about it. This is unlikely; it will need to be topped up. It may also need weeding, though using a weed-suppressant fabric can help with this.

As for walkways and paving, they too should be gone over with a power washer periodically. Painting can be more difficult and can cause slipping, so if it's not good enough in its natural state, consider replacements.

4. Something of Note

Finally, you want a central focus point for your frontal area. Be it a bird bath, feeder, water feature or a planter with trellis - anything that draws the eye will help the overall impact. Keep it well maintained, so it remains a focal point. It's possible to find a piece that will have a function as well as style, so long as you're willing to put in the effort to find it.
