Fixing Up Your Fixer-Upper

Fixing Up Your Fixer-Upper

If you’ve just moved into a new home, then congratulations! With the property market being as volatile as it is, becoming a homeowner is an achievement in itself. Now that you’ve crossed the threshold, the real work’s about to start. You might have found that your new house is more of a fixer-upper than you anticipated. If this is the case, don’t panic. Here are some helpful tips.

The most important thing to check is your home’s circuitry. The hot water not running is a drag. A faulty circuit setting your house on fire is a catastrophe. This obviously carries some pretty big risks so make sure you never tamper with a live circuit. Before you touch anything, get to the fuse box and turn off the circuit breakers. Once this is done, you can fiddle with different circuits in your home in relative safety. Check all of the switch panels, light fixtures and outlets to make sure they’re wired properly. Electric problems are common in old homes, but many of them can be solved by simply reconnecting certain wires. Don’t get ahead of yourself though. If you run into any issues which make you feel out of your depth, call an electrician.

One of the easier tasks of fixing up a house is applying a fresh coat of paint. Your new home might look like the setting for a horror movie, but you’d be surprised at the difference this can make. Odds are you’ve been given ugly, archaic wallpaper covered in blemishes. Turn this around by painting the home in bright, inviting colours. However you choose to decorate your walls, take discuss it with the family and don’t jump to decisions. Fixing up the whole home will really take it out of you, so get it right the first time! Here’s a more detailed guide to painting your home.

Many people neglect their roofs after moving into a new home. Although it doesn’t have to be aesthetically pleasing, your roof does have to serve its function. Over time, there are all kinds of problems that can damage a roof. Open seams between the tiles can cause them to fall away. Water pooling in single areas can lead to serious long-term damage. Depending on how old the home is, there may be a chance that the whole roof was installed with an outdated, insufficient method. Check your roof for even the slightest damage, and act on it quickly. It’s possible to tackle some of these problems yourself, but for safety’s sake I recommend hiring a roofer instead.

After hitting these issues, your fixer-upper will start to feel a little more like a home. Of course, there’s a lot more work to be done, but by getting the larger jobs out of the way you’ll be doing yourself a big favour. As you work more on your house, keep your long-term goals in mind. Are you planning to sell the house eventually? Expecting more kids? Take your time with each decision. One day, that rickety old shack will be the perfect home for you!
