Designing the Perfect Nursery for Your Baby

Designing the Perfect Nursery for Your Baby

Designing your baby’s nursery is a process that needs to be carefully planned out, with every last detail chosen with a fine-tooth comb. Your nursery needs to be practical and functional, to ensure you get the very best for your baby, and you want to create the perfect atmosphere too.

There are a few key elements to consider when designing your baby’s nursery, from lifestyle and taste, to feeding, sleeping and storage. Here are a few things to consider and remember to help you create the perfect nursery for you and your baby.

Choose a Theme

Before you buy anything, you need to decide on a theme for your little one’s nursery. Whether you know the gender of your baby or not, you can create the perfect theme and design the most beautiful space for your baby to grow and enjoy. You always have your typical blue and pink themes for boys or girls, however when the gender is kept a surprise you often find cream, yellow themes work really well. Stick to a colour scheme that is made up of soft, pastel colours that are gentle and not too bright, as you want the room to have a calm, relaxing atmosphere to ensure your baby is settled and comfortable and the room feels airy and open.

Baby Furniture

There are always obvious things to remember with your baby’s nursery, from the cot to the changing table, but it’s important to make sure that you have chosen the right kind of furniture for your nursery. When it comes to purchasing the cot, you have many different types to consider, from self-rocking cots to stand alone cots, and it’s best to choose a style that will work for you. When it comes to your changing table, wardrobe, shelving units and so on, try to stick within a range. Having all of your furniture from the same range will ensure the room looks finished and draw it together perfectly. You often find that your baby’s cot is the focal point in the nursery, so the way you position your nursery furniture should work around the cot. You’re always best to position the cot somewhere that allows plenty of space on either side, to ensure you have enough space to get your baby in and out safely.

Materials and Linen

One of the main things to consider when designing your baby’s nursery is the atmosphere. You want to create an atmosphere that is cosy, warm and comfortable to ensure they can settle down and drift into a deep sleep. You can create the perfect atmosphere and feel to the nursery by introducing some thick curtains, blinds, and comfy cot linen. Introducing lots of soft, comfortable materials will emphasise the soothing atmosphere and make the room feel really cosy. You could even look at introducing a rug to add to the soft, inviting feel.

Safety Features

Whilst designing a nursery for a new-born is nice and easy, it’s important to remember to make the nursery as safe and secure as possible for when your baby starts to grow, crawl and even walk. Sliding doors are a great feature to use instead of a normal swing door. The difference between a normal door and sliding doors is that you have less chance of any fingers becoming trapped or caught in doorways. The sliding doors can be designed to not fully close which will ensure you never have to worry about any doors slamming or banging shut. They run neatly along a sliding door track, too, which will keep things neat and tidy and give you more floor space to work with. Introducing special plug covers is another feature to consider. Adding these to the nursery will ensure no little fingers are being squashed into plug sockets out of curiosity. It’s so easy to take your eye away for a split second and your baby can have their hands absolutely anywhere! These simple, yet very effective safety features will make a big difference to the nursery overall.

Finishing Touches

Once you have designed the main part of your nursery, you can look at adding beautiful finishing touches that will add that little extra character to the room. Items such as cute teddy bears, blankets, photo frames, artwork and other delicate touches will really create a soft, inviting atmosphere that will be the ideal space to welcome your new-born baby into.
