It’s a great idea to get them involved in the design process, but remember that you should make the final decision. This is your home after all, and you may come to sell it one day. Use these hints and tips to help you create a special room for your teen:
A Desk for Homework
Depending on your teens age, they may appreciate a desk for homework. Even if they complain when it comes to doing homework, somewhere to get work done is important. They may even choose to go to college/university later on, where they will definitely need somewhere comfortable to get their work done. If you can also supply them with a good computer, printer, and other essentials, they should do well in their education.
Plenty of Storage and Shelves
Teens acquire a lot of stuff. When it comes to Christmas and birthdays, they just keep on getting spoiled with more clothes, books, games, and other things that teens want these days. Make sure they have a lot of storage space and plenty of shelves so that their room doesn’t become cluttered easily.
Good lighting is important in the room of a teen. They’ll need to make sure they aren’t applying their foundation so they have tide marks/aren’t using too much gel in their hair. In all seriousness, it’ll also be good for reading and writing projects/course work. Make sure they have the option of bright lighting or dimmed lighting should they need it.
Add Fun Elements and Textures
Teens may like to pretend they’re all grown up, but they still like to have fun elements and textures in their room. Use patterns, bright colours, and textures to funk the place up and make it a cool place to hang out. Make sure it’s somewhere they like having their friends around. With elements like this, you can really give their room a luxurious feel.
A Dressing Area (for Girls)
Teen girls will appreciate having a quality dressing area to make themselves look nice before leaving the house. A comfortable chair, like modern bean bag furniture for instance, and dressing table is a great idea. Make sure there’s also plenty of storage for their hair and makeup bits and bobs too. A full length mirror should also be provided so they can check their outfit properly before leaving the house.
It’s up to you whether you want to have a TV in their room. Most people have a TV in their room, but you need to bear in mind that it can put a damper on their creativity and stop them from sleeping at night. If you trust them to only use the TV at sensible times, then it shouldn’t be a problem. However, you don’t want it affecting their sleep and thus affecting their work and attitude.
