Clever Ways I Get Our House in Order

I like to keep my house in order as much as I can. If it gets too disorganised, I can't find where anything is. I don't like too much clutter, even though I enjoy having some beautiful homewares around the house.

There's a lot you can do to get your house organised, beyond just having a clear out and getting some new storage boxes. I try to go around the house at least once a year to stay on top of everything. If I'm not careful, the clutter can build up and start to take over. I have to be strict with myself sometimes to get rid of things I don't need or use, but I always get the job done eventually. Here are some of my best tips for getting my house in order.

Clear Out Junk

Before I start organising properly, I always get rid of junk first. Of course, not all of it looks like junk. Some of the things you don't need at home can look perfectly nice, but you have to think about what their purpose is. I try not to keep anything that isn't useful to me, either in a practical way or as a thing of beauty. With clothes, it's not enough if it looks lovely. Unless I actually wear it, there's no point in something hanging in my wardrobe forever. Home accessories might look good, but I have to think about what they bring to a room.

Clearing out your house can take a long time if you have a lot of stuff. The best thing to do if you need a major clear out is to get professionals in. If you arrange for a house clearance, people will come in and take anything you want to get rid of. Give them your furniture and appliances, old carpet, toys, clothes, and anything else. You can also do everything yourself, especially if you don't have much stuff. Create separate piles of things to sell, donate and throw away.

Rearrange Rooms

When you moved into your home, you might have arranged it by what the estate agent told you the rooms were. But what if your house could work if you changed it all around? You could think outside of the box and rearrange which room is which. I love the look of "upside down" houses, which have the bedrooms on the ground floor and living space upstairs. You probably don't want to put in the effort to move your kitchen, but you could switch other rooms around. Maybe the living room is bigger than the master bedroom, so you would rather swap them. Putting your living room upstairs can make it a more private room for during the day, and you can use curtains on blinds in the bedroom downstairs.

Get New Storage

I love intelligent storage that helps me organise my things in smart ways. There are so many ways you can get everything in order. Some of my favourite things are items that aren't just for storage. Boxes and other things can take up a lot of room, so it's better if they can do more than one thing. You can get benches that have lots of storage space inside or coffee tables you can open up. But even ordinary boxes, cabinets and shelves can be useful for organising. Sometimes our house is cluttered because I don't know where to put some things. If I have enough storage, I can make sure everything has a home.

Keep Important Items Safe

There's nothing worse than the panic when you can't find something important. I like to know where all my valuable documents and other items are. They include my passport, bank statements and other financial details. It's a good idea to have a safe or another lockable place to put these things. You might just pick a particular drawer or put everything in a folder, but locking everything up is safer. It helps to give you somewhere to put papers, so you don't have random bits of paper floating around the house. Anything you don't need to have on paper can go in the recycling. Just make sure you shred anything sensitive first.

Focus on the Kitchen

Our kitchen can quickly become one of the messiest rooms in the house. If we don't stay on top of everything, there can soon be no space to put anything down. There are probably more items in your kitchen than in any other room in your home. You need ways to organise appliances, food, pots and pans, and utensils. And a lot of kitchen items are difficult to store neatly. Luckily, there are lots of kitchen storage solutions you can use. Space-saving things like lazy susans are a particular favourite of mine. I also like long, thin drawers with two shelves so that you can use all the space in the kitchen. Storing your pots and pans by nesting them and stacking the lids neatly helps too.

Put Things in Intuitive Places

Our home always feels more organised when I can find things where I expect to find them. If the kitchen drawer is the first place I always look for scissors, that's where they belong. I like to think carefully about where everything should go, and not just randomly put things away. Everything should go in sensible places that are convenient and make sense.

Use Space Smartly

There are lots of ways to use the space you have available to organise things. As well as horizontal space, there's also vertical space. I use shelves so that I can organise anything from books to boxes and use the wall space. It's also a good idea to put storage in all those small areas you can't use for anything else. For example, you can fit a bookcase into an alcove. I always try to use the space we have as smartly as possible.

If you have to have your home organised like I do, these tips should help you out. A tidy house can help your life feel neater too.
