5 Ways to Keep Your Home Safe When You're Not There

When you are going away, you are naturally concerned about your home. Here are five ways to keep it safe while you’re away.

1. Halt Your Mail

If a potential burglar can peer through a window or the letterbox and see a big pile of mail on the mat, they will know no one is home. This is a simple trick that all burglars know about. So, you need to get around it by making sure that you halt your mail before you set off on your travels. It’s simple to ask the local post office to keep your mail for a couple of weeks until you get back. And then when you’re home you can pay them a visit and pick it all up. It’s a small idea, but it really works.

2. Make it Look Like Someone is There

Making it look like someone is in the home at different times of the day will make it less of a target for burglars. Criminals always want to break into homes that they think they can steal from and get away with it. But if there is someone in the home, they will be less likely to think that they will get away with the crime. So, how can you make it look like people are in the home at different times of the day? It’s quite simple. You just have to invest in a timer that will switch the lights on and off at set times.

3. Don’t Shout About Your Activities

When you are going on holiday and leaving your home unoccupied, it’s tempting to write about it on your social media accounts. People like to post photos from their travels and keep all their friends and family up to date with what they are doing. But this is not something that is very wise. When burglars can see that you are not at home, then they will know that they have an opportunity to break in. Remember, everything you post on the internet will be viewable by everyone out there.

4. Fake It

There is one way in which you can fake it and make people believe that your home is actually more secure than it is. These days, you can buy a fake surveillance camera and put it on the wall outside your home. Then whenever anyone arrives at the home, they will see it pointing at them. And they are very cheap to buy because they are not actually functioning as a real CCTV camera would. It is a pure deterrence, and it gets the results you’re looking for.

5. Ask Neighbours to Call In

Even if you do all the things listed above, there is still a chance that someone could try to break into your home. To get around that problem, you should probably ask someone to call in and check your home. If you have a pet, then you will already have to do this anyway. But even if you don’t, it’s a good idea to ask someone to have a look around. They will be able to move any leaflets or newspapers that have been shoved through the door and check everything is alright.
