4 Secrets To Making Your Rental Property A Little More Homey

4 Secrets To Making Your Rental Property A Little More Homey

Living in rental accommodation is becoming increasingly popular, especially for low-income and military families. While renting your home has many benefits, one downside is that most of the time, you aren’t allowed to make changes to the design of the property.

You can’t swap the wallpaper or paint, knock down any walls or change the flooring. However, don’t let that stop you from creating a space that you love. Just because you can’t make big changes to rental apartments and houses, that doesn’t mean that you can’t make them more personal.

Intrigued? Of course you are. Who wouldn’t want to make their rental home a little homier? To make your property a little more stylish and personal, here are six design secrets to take note of:

1. Switching the light fixtures will make a huge difference

Often, rental homes come with standard light fixtures. These tend to be old and outdated, and lack style. Head to your local DIY store and pick out some new light fittings that you love. Don’t forget to take the color scheme of the room into account when choosing these.

It’s amazing how swapping the light fixtures can make such a big difference to the look and feel of your home. Just make sure to store the old lampshades, so that when you move out, you can re-fit them.

2. Don’t be afraid to hang wall art

Many renters are scared to put holes in the walls to hang up wall art, mirrors and other pieces of decor, but you shouldn’t be. You may not own the property, but it’s your home, and you need to be able to make it feel like it.

If you want to make your property feel more homey, hanging your favorite pieces of wall art is a must. You can even put up shelves if you want to, and can use them to display family pictures.

All you need to do is make sure that before you move out, you fill in any holes that you have made. You can use specialist filler for this, or if you’re all out, a white bar of soap can work just as well. Yes, really. Rubbing a bar of soap over any holes in the wall is an excellent way to fill them in.

3. Transform the walls with temporary fixtures

You may not be allowed to paint or wallpaper the walls, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t liven them up with temporary fixes. Have you ever heard of contact paper? It’s a type of semi-permanent wallpaper that can be stuck over wallpapered or painted walls. Best of all, it's super easy to remove, and leaves no damage.

If you want to jazz your rental home up, using contact paper is an excellent option. You can add style and personality to each room, without having to worry about getting in trouble with your landlord.

4. Cover unsightly flooring with an awesome rug

Can’t stand the flooring in your home? Investing in an incredible rug design could be the answer. Whether you have hardwood floors or carpets, using rugs is a fantastic way to add a sense of style and personality to your property.

On neutral floors, opt for a bold, standout rug design. On patterned flooring, go for a plain design, and use it to bring a little calmness to the space.

It can be tough to make a rental home look stylish and personal, but by taking account of these awesome ideas, it is doable.
