Located in The Netherlands, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam known as a municipal museum for modern art is famous for its royal, splendid and artistic design. This extraordinary museum has been recently transformed by MVRDV into an interesting space for showcasing great art works by well known artists such as Karel Appel, Lucebert, Constant and Corneille, etc as well as for visiting and relaxing. According to the architects, the key point of this project is to preserve the original architecture of a neoclassical Giudici chapel, which until recently stood neglected. The transformation unites the demanded programme in a series of large book shelves including the reception desk, wardrobe, the museum store, the cafe counter and various spaces for displaying art.
“With one clear and monumental gesture, we have combined many functions whilst at the same time keeping the space as open and usable as possible. The design is respectful towards the impressive and grandiose yet at the same time austere chapel, whilst adding qualities the space lacked, providing new functions.”, explained Nathalie de Vries on behalf of MVRDV.
