Architecture Trends to Watch In 2018

Architecture Trends to Watch In 2018

Architecture is a constantly evolving art as well as cultural trends in our society. As such, architects have a tremendous amount of influence, not only on how we perceive our towns and cities now but for future generations too. Below are some of the emerging architectural trends that look set to feature more and more in building designs over the next years.

Open-Plan Space

Open-plan spaces are designed to blur the lines between the different sections of a house and encourage sociability and openness between people in different areas. The objective is to give homes a more communal, friendly, and welcoming feel. Open-plan designs are becoming especially popular with families as a way of mitigating the segregation that usually occurs as children grow older and begin to enjoy their own company more. Many places of work are also turning to open-plan set ups as a way of maximizing space and encouraging cooperation and teamwork among employees.

Multiple Master Bedrooms

Across the developed world, property prices and rent prices are increasing, while an increasing number of young people are starting to look for homes of their own. Sharing a home with other occupants allows residents to split the financial and other burdens of property ownership and thus opens the property ladder up to those who would otherwise find it difficult to buy or rent a home on their own. Similarly, an increasing number of people are turning to property developments like the Circle C Ranch in Austin, Texas.

This arrangement has also given rise to an increasing number of multigenerational homes where multiple generations of the same family live together under one roof. Some multiple occupancy properties offer self-contained living areas.  Even while living in the same house as others, residents still have a degree of privacy and separation from other occupants if they so desire.

Integrated Electronics

Smart devices are becoming more common and more accessible, both in terms of cost and ease of use, and an increasing number of homes are being connected in this way. It is still something of a rarity to find a house that comes with such systems already set up, but they are on the rise and the process of converting a normal home into one with interconnected smart devices is much more streamlined than it used to be.

Additionally, there is now a wide range of furniture available with wireless charging pads built in and there are a growing number of consumer electronics that support wireless charging capabilities. As this technology is refined it will have applications beyond charging mobile phones and ultimately can be made to work over a distance, meaning that with the right infrastructure a device can be charged just by being in the right room.

As we enter the second half of the year and 2018 approaches, architects, and designers, as well as passionate observers, are watching developments in the fields of electronics, technology, and manufacturing to try and get some idea of what new possibilities will be open to them by the time January rolls around. If current trends are any predictor then over the next decade we will see a substantial shift in the form and function of new homes.
